Values in Action Programme

“Developing the whole child must first begin with instilling the right character and values…
It is about developing an enduring core of competencies, values and character to anchor
our young and ensure that they have the resilience to succeed.”

~ Former Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, Parliament Speech 2013.

Values in Action (VIA) places a strong emphasis on the inculcation of values through community involvement. VIA learning experiences support the development of students’ civic and social competencies toward becoming socially responsible citizens, capable of contributing meaningfully to their community and the nation. It is an important part of character development as it builds the spirit of volunteerism and giving back to society.

As Singapore moves ahead in the 21st century, there is a need to focus on information technology and the new economy. In addition, our young need to develop critical skills and values so that they can be in a better position to manage and address the social and environmental challenges that lie ahead.

Through the learning and application of values, knowledge and skills, VIA@YJC challenges every YJCian to hone their intellectual curiosity to enquire into the social issues and complexities Singapore society faces.  Students learn to critically reflect on their experiences, the values they have put into practice, and how they can make a positive difference in their community.

VIA@YJC focuses on fostering student ownership over how they contribute to the community through:

  • CCA based student-led VIA initiatives and community involvement projects guided by our VIA teacher mentors
  • Annual VIA discovery workshops jointly organised by our VIA student ambassadors
  • The annual college-wide Operation JAW (Janitors Appreciation Week)
  • The Overseas Service Learning Programme (OSLP)
  • YJC Celebrating Values Day (CVD)

The VIA@YJC curriculum takes reference from MOE’s CCE Core Values which are derived from

  • Our Shared Values
  • the Singapore Family Values,
  • Singapore 21 Vision and
  • the National Education messages
